Austria is a major donor of aid to Eastern Europe. Much aid is aimed at stemming a large influx of economic refugees from the former communist states. Aid donations to the former Yugoslavia are likely to increase once peace is achieved. Austria was a major exporter to the region and will be seeking a key role in reconstruction.
